About us
Míla was established in April, 2007 to operate the telecommunications network. Míla's activities build on over 116 years of experience. Míla emphasizes on continuous development to maintain leadership in telecommunications market in Iceland.
Míla's history starts in 1906 when submarine cable was laid from Scotland via the Farao Islands to Seyðisfjörður in the east of Iceland. Telephone lines were then laid from Seyðisfjörður to Akureyri and on to Reykjavík. It took many years to install phone in every home but in 1960 all homes in rural area of the country were connected, but even then many households shared every line.
In 1986 the first fiber optic cable was laid between Reykjavík and Selfoss. The cable had the capacity of 140 Mb/s and could carry 2000 voice channels. At that time people thought that it would be sufficient indefinitely, but we know better now. The same cable is still in use and has much greater capacity today than when it was first laid.
Míla's Network
Míla's telecommunications system is robust and diverse, based mainly on two systems: trunk network and access network. Míla's system is like a telecommunications highway for voice telephones, cell phones, data transport, and television and radio broadcasts of other companies. Míla sells its products at wholesale to companies with telecommunications license.
Míla's network has bandwidth conforming to the requirements of the market each time. In 1986 the transport capacity of the first stage of the fiber optic cable from Reykjavik to Selfoss was 140 Mb/s. This transport capacity could carry 2000 voice channels, and it was thought at the time that it would suffice indefinitely.
Míla provides VDSL connections to every home in urban areas in Iceland, with the possibility of 50 - 100 Mb/s download speed. Since 2009 Míla has provided Fibre optic to new houses under constructions , instead of copper lines. And since 2015 Míla has laid fibre connections to households in the capital area, and has started laying fibre connections in many towns around the country, such as Akureyri, Húsavík, Egilsstaðir, Selfoss and in Reykjanesbær.

Míla heavily emphasizes reliability and operational security, and there will be continuous development to maintain leadership in the telecommunications market. The company plans to seek the best solutions each time and provide professional service
